In 1978 after graduating from South Texas College of Law, I went on a 2 week long vacation at a Club Med on the west coast of Mexico where I took a resort course. I fell in love with diving and became a PADI Basic Open Water Diver in March of 1979. I would go on a dive vacation once a year making 10 to 25 dives during a week. I slowly worked my way up the PADI continuing education ladder and became a PADI Divemaster in 1994. In 1999 after practicing plaintiff’s personal injury trial law in Arlington, Texas for 21 years, I decided to close my law office, change careers and make money doing what I love, diving. In April 2000 I became a PADI open water scuba instructor and in the summer of 2000 I worked as a PADI scuba instructor for Florida Sea Base, one of three national high adventure Boy Scout camps in the United States. I continued to work at Florida Sea Base for a total of 15 seasons from 2000 through 2005 in various positions included scuba instructor, dive boat captain and in the spring and summer of 2005 the scuba commissioner when I was in charge of the day to day operation of the scuba program. In the spring of 2004 I became a PADI IDC Staff Instructor at Florida Keys Dive Center and shortly thereafter began working for them. In December of 2001, I became a licensed USCG captain and in March of 2005 I obtained my 50 ton Master’s Captain’s license. In July of 2005, I became a PADI Course Director. In addition to the Florida Keys, I have been diving in the Bahamas, Cozumel, Belize, the Bay Island of Honduras (Utila and Roatan), all three of the Cayman Islands, Bonaire, St. Croix, Guam, Galapagos, Truk Lagoon and Palau. I tell people I am a recovering attorney/professional scuba bum. In the first part of 2006, I worked in the westernmost territory of the U.S. (Guam) and the easternmost territory of the U.S. (St. Croix), only to return to the Florida Keys and work for the Florida Keys Dive Center where I teach scuba courses ranging from introductory courses to instructor level courses and drive dive boats.
