We picked the day 3/16 to take the 1pm trip snorkel trip after watching the weather and wind forecasts. Check in was professional and all about safety and equipment.... read more I went for a wet suit which was a good decision ocean temp was 74 and I wanted to maximize my snorkel time by keeping warm. Before departing we saw a mother manatee and her small calf. Captain was very careful leaving the dock. ScubJoe did the safety intro and demonstration of PFA for 22 POB. Captain Karl put us over the reef and ordered us off his boat to Go have FUN. Got fish? Sure did see all kinds. Followed a nurse shark who had no idea I was above her. The 2 reef trip was a relief from the anxiety and stress of the reality around us. You do not have to get in the water. To come on board just pay the small fee to be a passenger and enjoy the trip out and back to the reefs. Fine views from the bridge too.
What we weren't aware of and prepared for on this trip was the choppiness of the waves (~2-3 feet swell). It seems this is typical of The Keys in... read more spring so I would suggest being a confident swimmer and not being susceptible to seasickness as the criteria for enjoying this activity at this time of year. However, that in itself is not why I rate this only average.
My husband and I have snorkeled several times before but never in these type of conditions. As such, we really weren't prepared for the experience. We went on 2 days with different companies and felt that these guys didn't really give any guidance. The positive was that the boat was relatively small and was half empty so it wasn't crowded at all. However, they don't have dive platforms so getting in and out of the water wasn't so easy - well, getting in is because you just jump but getting out was quite a trial in the choppy water. We had our own equipment, which we were glad about because it appeared that they only provided J snorkels rather than dry or semi-dry, which are better in choppy conditions.
The captain and mate didn't really keep an eye on everyone which was a bit disconcerting if anyone had got into trouble. As it was, both my husband and I got quite a shock about the choppiness and cut our snorkeling short. In the end, the whole trip was less than 4 hours, probably more like 3 due to the conditions.
Made two different stops and saw a variety of fish including a sea turtle and nurse shark. Staff was very friendly and informative. Went in February and the staff recommended... read more using a wet suit. Turned out to be great advice as we were in the water for some time and it did get a little cold. Enjoyed the fruit on the ride back. Would definitely do again.
My two children and I received our SCUBA certification over a 3 day span and it was excellent! Scuba Joe was awesome and very friendly and patient. The crew on the boat was also excellent and very friendly. Never felt scared with Scuba Joe and he is great with young adolescents. An experience we will never forget.
I loved everything about my 2 days of diving with FKDC: the shop location, the shop itself, the boat, the fabulous crew, the focus on having fun while being safe and taking care of the environment, the equipment, and the variety of the dive sites. Both days of diving were run so well. The crew was wonderfully organized and competent, and they clearly love what they do. I saw so many different types of ocean creatures. I especially loved the abundance of beautiful purple sea fans at one site, the friendly group of nurse sharks at another, and the abundance of moray eels and puffer fish at another. Cory, Ronnie, Tracey, Zach, Carsten, and Scuba Joe, I’m so happy I get to look forward to diving with you all at FKDC again this December
We had a great time and It was interesting to snorkel with the Divers. We didn’t expected it but we didn’t mind it . It felt more professional and serious than other Snorkeling trips we have done. Zak and Tracy were very careful and professional and they also seem very knowledgeable . I might even get into diving after this trip
Had a great trip on the big dipper. Awesome staff, very friendly and helpful. Zach was our dive guide and we had a blast with him! He was so personable, funny and was an excellent dive buddy, pointing things out that we would’ve never noticed and giving us fun facts about all of the aquatic animals we saw, giving us tips and tricks to become a better diver, etc. Overall, everyone was extremely friendly and fun to be around. We will definitely be booking more dives through the Florida Keys Dive Center in the future. Thanks so much for an amazing experience!
